A Performance review is known as an annual review, employee appraisal, or evaluation. A performance appraisal evaluates an employee’s skills, achievements, and growth. The performance review process is a critical HR management tool that focuses on fair and action-oriented appraisal. It involves effective evaluation techniques, frequent feedback, use of technology, management by performance objectives, and meaningful feedback.

 

Systematic appraisal of performance helps to develop confidence among employees. It will prevent grievances if the employees are convinced of the impartial basis of the evaluation. Thus, performance appraisal is a significant element of information and control systems in organizations.

Performance appraisals help employees and managers devise strategies to refocus their tasks, make them realize how their work makes a difference for the company, and align the company’s mission, vision, and values with their tasks and standard processes. This is the process of identification, measurement, and management of human performance an organizations

 

There are two main purposes of performance appraisals

·         Evaluative: Its goal is to inform your employees about where they stand in terms of performance. Performance data is used to reward top performers and identify underachievers.

·         Developmental: It is meant to find the root causes of why employees fail to meet their goals. The performance data is then used to provide employees with the necessary training and development.

 

 How frequently should you conduct performance appraisals?

Previously, the trend was to conduct annual reviews. However, a year is a long time in which many things can change. That is why, when it comes to measuring performance, it is not a reliable period to wait. Most businesses now conduct performance reviews every 3-6 months.

When appraisers know the objectives of performance appraisal, they automatically gain a competitive edge over others, that’s because start making more rational decisions regarding how to boost organizational development.
